Utilising this controller alongside the Rekordbox software allowed users to be liberated from the confines of their laptop screens, permitting DJs to queue tracks, access BPM and beatgrids, beat sync, quantise cuepoints, edit loops and load tracks directly from Rekordbox using only the controller and its accompanying LCD screen. Rekordbox took an interesting turn following Pioneer’s announcement of the XDJ-RX all-in-one controller in January 2015. With these updates, Pioneer proved the innovative and professional nature of their Rekordbox software.

This update built on the original features and made for a more intuitive software, with Related Track tools queuing all tracks that met a certain tag, improved import and export capabilities, and a handy 2-player mode. The Rekordbox software began its journey towards international acclaim following a major update in July 2014 when Rekordbox 3.0 was launched. Compared with other major digital DJ mixing programmes, Rekordbox has been around for a relatively short period of time, making Pioneer’s ability to cultivate the Rekordbox software into a leading mixing platform with an unparalleled reputation for professional quality and consistently high standards all the more impressive. Over the following years, they turned their emphasis towards software development and began the process of growing Rekordbox DJ.

Prior to the expansion of this software, Pioneer specialised in hardware controllers, audio-visual entertainment, and general DJ equipment releasing their first Pro DJ rack mount mixer under the name DJM-3000 back in November 2001.

With the first version of Rekordbox becoming available in 2009, development continued as Pioneer unveiled the first mobile version of their Rekordbox software (version 1.5.2) back in April 2012. With many high-tech and advanced features that place it at the premium end of mixing platforms, Pioneer’s Rekordbox software has developed an unprecedented reputation over the years. The software is undoubtedly aping much that works in its biggest rivals - Serato and Traktor - but with its sample sequencer and impressive effects, there are just enough fresh ideas in there. When discussing digital DJ mixing software, Rekordbox seems to be a software frequented by the pros. It's getting bigger all the time too a recent update introduced the vital MIDI learn option, opening up the software for non-Pioneer controller users, and several paid expansions are now available, adding DVS support, video mixing and an expanded library of effects. While it's Pioneer's first attempt at a mixing application, much of the tech - such as the beat detection algorithms, tagging systems and digital effects - is built upon the company's other DJ products, and as such has benefited from several years of refinement. Minor gripes aside, there's a lot to like about rekordbox DJ. More useful is the ability to rearrange the virtual decks and waveforms to sit either vertically or horizontally. How useful both of these functions are is up for debate - some functions, such as the mixer, can happily be hidden when used with a controller, but others are just impractical to have tucked away mid-set and, while dual- screen support is nice at home, realistically who's turning up to the club with a second monitor?
